This book focuses on 25 buildings on the island of Cura\u00e7ao, constructed between the 1930s and the 1960s, whose designs were influenced by two distinct yet interrelated international architectural styles that emerged in the early 20th century: the Modern Movement and Art Deco.<\/p>\n
In previous centuries, architectural styles in Cura\u00e7ao were largely influenced by corresponding movements in Europe. This also applies to the Modern Movement and Art Deco architecture, which were introduced by Dutch architects working on the island.<\/p>\n
The book is published by DoCoMoMo Cura\u00e7ao and LM Publishers to draw attention and create awareness of modern architecture and its cultural value, which is crucial for preserving the fine buildings of this period. This documentation aims primarily to achieve that goal.<\/p>\n

Authors<\/strong><\/p>\n This publication was compiled by Michael A. Newton, a Cura\u00e7ao-born architect and architectural historian who studied architecture at Delft University of Technology (Netherlands). He was involved in establishing a monument policy for Cura\u00e7ao, worked for some twenty- five years as a conservation architect at the Cura\u00e7ao Monuments Fund Foundation, and has written several publications on the island\u2019s historical architecture. Since 2015, he has been the managing director of Newton Heritage Consulting and works as a heritage consultant in Cura\u00e7ao as well as on various islands and countries in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n Ton Verkuijlen is a professional and creative photographer. Dutch by origin but working in Cura\u00e7ao for decades. Result driven, perfectionist but easy going.
